Temporary (1 week) 3g or wireless internet in California?

I'm on a week long trip to California (Los Angeles) soon, and I'd like to get some 3g internet access for my iPhone while there. If possible, I'd like to tether my macbook to the iPhone as well when on the go. Is there any place where I can get such a connectivity (as cheap as possible, natch)? Do I need any apps for the tethering?

a prepaid SIM from t-mobile is like $20, you can get one week unlimited data for some low fee on the prepaid plan. jailbreak the iphone and use a tether app, there's two good ones in the cydia store ($5 or $10?).

Another possibility is a mifi device from any of the carriers.
