Suggestions for a nice (maybe modern?) grandfather clock as a gift?

A group of people want to get together to give someone a nice grandfather clock. I'm not 100% sure how much we're looking to spend at this point (depends how many people chip in), but we definitely want to go above the lower-tier $200 ones I found everywhere online. Ballpark, let's say around $1000 but with a lot of flexibility in that. If you know of something really gorgeous for more, let me know, but we certainly don't have the means to spend 10k or anything. Oh, and given that it's a gift, it might be best if it doesn't have to chime, though I don't know if that's really an option.

If it matters, we're in Ithaca, NY; however, I suspect we should be able to find something better online.

I saw this but am

Outside your price range, but this weekend I saw a clock by Howard Miller that I loved. Turns out it was designed by Ty Pennington, so it's on the modern side. It's around $2500. See, here.

Other modern Howard Miller's can be found here.

(I know nothing about clocks.)

Tiuku Clock ($295)
Godfather Clock (£245)
IKEA PS Pendel clock ($199)

Though it's not quite a grandfather clock, the Ghost Clock ($166) looks amazing.

Just weighing in in favor of getting a chime-optional clock. My parents had a great clock when I was growing up, but we could never actually run it because it was so loud.

We own a Sligh clock that we received as a wedding gift and they can be bought for around 1k for some models. They really are nice things to have long term but you want to live in area where someone can perform service on them if needed at your home. They are not easy to transport.

I thought these were pretty awesome and even bought plans for one for my mom to make.

I was in a clock shop today. It seemed like all of the grandfather clocks had a way to turn off the chimes or had a "Night" setting so that the chimes rang only during the day. This store was in Louisiana, but check out the local clock shops in your area.
