What is this unusual piece of playground equipment?

Some other information that might be useful.

-It is in a new park near equipment meant for younger children
-In case it is not clear in the pictures, there is a plexi-glass plate held in place by each of the blue frames
-The yellow part has several holes that look like they should hold something
-They are placed very close to a fence

Here is another picture in case it helps.

Interesting.
Is it possible the yellow section could hold cups of paint and children are encouraged to paint the plexiglass which may or may not be easy to clean off?
Or is my idea crazier than these little structures to begin with?

Response by poster: That is what I thought at first, too. But we go there frequently and there is no evidence it has ever been used that way.

Best answer: It is definitely a painting module. Who knows why it's never used as such; it might be up to nearby preschools to bring their own painting stuff, or perhaps it was part of a program that was never fully implemented.

Best answer: You can bring your own chalk, paint, etc. in little cups.

Ooops. I meant pastels chalk, not sidewalk chalk. The painty kind.

Response by poster: Awesome. We'll have to do that next time.

The installation does seem kinda poorly thought out in that these are supposed to encourage social play and collaboration, but they've put it so close to the fence that nobody can work on the other side.

You might want to check with whoever runs the park before bringing paint. Other parents are likely to be just as baffled as you are, and may not be happy when they see a child - supervised by a parent, no less! - painting on brand new playground equipment!

At the very least, you might want to bring a printout of Miko's link with you.

Well, then fuck them!

Seriously, those are awesome. I've never seen anything like them, and the area I live in is known for awesome and plentiful parks and playgrounds. The picture in iconomy's link is adorable.
