I want to create cover songs

I want to create my own covers of anime/game music, what kind of resources/skills do I need?

Hey everyone!
I am currently learning to play the saxophone, and during this journey I am slowly figuring out more about my music tastes, and things I'd like to do.

One of the things I hope to do in the future is to do covers (may not be the right term) of anime/game music. An example, is muta1206 on youtube. Here is an example of various songs from Chrono Trigger. Or a solo on alto.

muta1206's solos seem to be playing against the OST with the vocals removed. I want to rework songs, e.g. Adesso e Fortuna; Flame and Eternal - In my mind, I have a faster, more upbeat version of it, with a bright alto sax to take over the vocals, and guitar for accompaniment, as well as some improvisation.

I would love recommendations for books, resources and skills to learn, found this thread that is quite illuminating.

Thanks!

Best answer: Seems like Vocaloid would be useful, to do the backing music and vocals.

Best answer: Have you dropped by OCReMix yet? It's a community devoted to remixing video game music. I listen to their station on Last.fm and they're on Twitter and Facebook.

Response by poster: Heya! Thanks for the responses. I didn't realize Vocaloid was a piece of s/w, will check that out.

@dragonplayer - ah, no! I totally forgot about them. I do listen to ocremix tags on last.fm, but visiting their website totally was off my radar. Thanks!
