What kind of bug is this? Captured indoors in Northern Virginia last week. Body is about 12mm long.

Best answer: That is what people call a camel cricket or spider cricket.

They're pretty common and are completely harmless.

Get some sticky pad traps. Put them under furntiture, out of reach of pets or kids. You'll be horrified by how many collect on it. We used to have a recurring problem with them in our basement and outdoor shed (Bethesda, MD). That is until the traps caught literally dozens each. Took about two summers but the problem is gone. Apparently there was more than one generation's worth of eggs involved.

Yeah, the cat was entertained by them, but it was a bit annoying to keep finding those large hind leg pieces left behind.
