Recommendation for horse race betting?

My husband wants to try his hand at betting on horse racing again, something he used to do many years ago with some success. Any recommendations as to the best website(s) for doing same? Primarily interested in European races.

You seem to be American. This is illegal, isn't it, in the US?

What I meant was that doing that through a web site was illegal. You can bet on horseraces at most casinos. Is there an Indian reservation near you?

Depending on where you are located, TVG and HRTV offer betting on races from Great Britain, Australia and the US as well as showing the races.

Response by poster: Yes, I'm American. I had no idea it was illegal here. Drat.

I don't think it's actually illegal. There are a lot of laws, yes, but some relevant sources:

General wiki on online gambling
Interstate Horse Racing Act info
Page describing the exception for horse racing

It seems like Federal law does allow it, so its state by state. You have to play with a licensed operator in a state that allows that kind of gambling.

TVG operates in:

Wagering services are currently offered in California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania*, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

So it's a specific exemption for horse racing (which I remember being discussed at the time the Online Gambling Act or w/e was passed a few years ago).

Oh, and some more info on TVG. They have TV channels, operate in the US, etc. If the government didn't think it was legal, they could easily be shut down -- its not like those offshore poker sites they were targeting.

wildcrdj has it. It's not necessarily illegal at the federal level, but you do need to live in a state that authorizes OTB (off-track betting). And that doesn't necessarily mean you do or don't have race tracks... I'm in MN, and we have two tracks, one Harness, one Thoroughbred, but you can only wager on horse races at those facilities; I tried to sign up with TVG when I found out my satellite TV provider shows it, but it wouldn't let me due to my address. They wouldn't accept a PO box, either :(

Churchill Downs runs Twinspires.com, which offers a pretty good number of tracks including some in England and Australia.

I don't bet online and I don't bet in the States, so I don't know the rules that apply. I do enjoy racing, so I tend to read about it.

The Daily Racing Forum offers links to betting sites and services, so he may want to start looking there. DRF links

Thoroughbred Times seems to link only to XpressBet. I think it's XpressBet that typically sends me e-mails offering free bets for the big (Triple Crown, etc.) races if I open an account.
