Austin to New Orleans Suggestions

What should we see, eat, or do on our way from Austin to New Orleans?

We will be driving from Austin to Nola in late September and looking for any suggestions to add to our itinerary.

That's only probably an 8 hour drive - are you taking mulitple days? Just looking for places to eat? How much time will you have?

Assuming that you're going through Houston, there are some previous threads with pretty good suggestions: tag:Houston

If taking the southern route, you can look for the abandoned whorehouse in La Grange that inspired one of ZZ Top's most distinctive songs. It's only about a mile off that route.

AAA has this neat online tool called Trip Tik. It is sort of an online road trip planner.

Correction: My first link should have been here. Not sure how that got fouled up, maybe an unclosed quote mark or something.

Avery Island - You can see egrets, alligators, nutria and where they make Tabasco. More here

Whatever you see, eat, or do, please spend lots of money doing it. The people between Beumont and New Orleans have not had the easiest time of it the last few years!

That said you can always stop by Cajun Williamsburg.

Are you taking 290 out of Austin? Although they have a terrible web page, Royer's Round Top Cafe has excellent food. Try the pie!

If you do end up going through La Grange, check out Weikel's Bakery. In addition to great kolaches, you can also get cookies, cakes, etc. I can also personally recommend the jarred pickles and packaged Wendish noodles.
