Calling all Monkey(filter)'s....

Any monkey know what's up with the site? It's all down, tracicle's blog, Monkeyfilter, wiki, all of it. Anyone been able to contact her? Page coming up says that all these sites have been suspended. Would try her in KoL, but can't remember her name.

Looks like a billing problem. I've written to her, as have no doubt several hundred others.

Seems like a bandwidth issue.

The official word in #mofirc is: nobody knows, and she's been away for the day so there'll no immediate resolution.

No clue, but I'm glad you posted this. Email's in my profile here - happy to help in any way needed if needed - I'm already jonesing.

Mentions of billing and bandwidth make me wonder how much it all costs.

Response by poster: Makes me wonder if maybe she needs some cash flow for the site. I know many have offered and she has turned them down, but really, we all use it, she shouldn't carry the load. Any suggestions?
posted by codeofconduct at 9:52 PM on May 13, 2005

Suggestions: Depends on what the problem is. If it's billing, Paypal's there. If it's ISP complaints that the load is too taxing on servers or whatever, beyond recommendations for a new host, nothing much to do.
posted by Gyan at 10:14 PM on May 13, 2005

Response by poster: I guess my confusion is that I thought the overload problem had been remedied fairly recently. Also, it seems the last time Monkeyfilter went down, hard, it wasn't showing this type of page. No point in speculating, I suppose.

'Scuse, but does anyone know who the host is for MoFi?
posted by taz at 10:36 PM on May 13, 2005

Never mind - I was just being lazy... It looks like Ion Web.
posted by taz at 10:49 PM on May 13, 2005

I'm wondering if it was the wiki. You would think that if bandwidth was becoming an issue we would have heard about it before now (she did overhaul recently but I thought she had worked that all out), but maybe there was enough increased traffic to the wiki that it put her over the limit.

Sorry. I just had to keep checking that page to read what everyone's panties were like.
posted by PY at 12:27 AM on May 14, 2005

I'm so silly. I noticed it down at the same time MeFi was down. For a full minute I couldn't understand why my ISP was saying that 'this account has been suspended'. Heh. I took it as a sign and went to bed.

Jesus fuck! If only there was some other community weblog with a similar setup but perhaps a slightly different colour and more members, where I could continue to post endless inane rubbish about beetles that eat magic pie and live up my nose.

But there's NOTHING.

Fuck YOU, the interblog or whatever.

She should let people chip in so she can get some sort of cheap VPS (or even a dedi) for between $40 - $100 a month. I pay $99 a month for one of my servers and it has 1000GB bandwidth per month, and very reliable. I doubt MonkeyFilter is even using a quarter of that.

Did she just move? I thought I remembered reading something about that.

When I moved my TypePad account was almost suspended because I forgot to update my address in their automatic billing form. Apparently the credit card companies actually check that sort of thing. I wonder if the issue isn't simply a technicality like that.

People, this is NOT a Curious George thread. There are certain rules around here for staying "on topic" that are enforced by a stern librarian and a maniac on a recumbent bike.

On topic: I can pledge a few bucks, plus 5GB monthly bandwidth on my 1and1 freebie hosting toward providing MoFi with seperate space for the wiki, or a mirror site, or whatever.

And let this be a lesson to all individual webmasters and webmistresses: Keep a back-up administrator for your site (who you are NOT married to).

I just hope the extended period of silence from tracicle and family is not due to any family emergency/tragedy/crisis. Two of my favorite web neighbors are going through bad times (Presurfer's mother passed away; Mark Evanier's mother is very ill), and you know how these things happen in threes.

Let's all try to keep clam. Prolly just some administrative screw-up at the hosting outfit compounded by a little Murphy's Law and some bad Friday the 13th mojo.

If not, we can blame quidnunc and his goddam underpants.

quidnunc - say that thing again, what you were saying about wishing there was another community weblog?? hey, maybe...

nah...never mine...

Really, this post? It's one link to a suspended site. The link will revert to the site once whatever problem has been resolved and then the post will be completely mysterious.
posted by jessamyn at 7:08 PM on May 14, 2005

Yeah. I think it's best here, and I'm glad it is. I was wondering if anyone knew anything and there's no real way to find out because I bet her monkeyfilter email is down too.

It was a silly FPP, though.

God. What with the "connection refused" and JRun around here all the time, I knew I could always count on Monkeyfilter for some posting and commenting when I got that itch. It had sort of become like a windows vs. linux thing... you expect one to crash and lock up constantly, but when the OTHER one goes kaplooey you just sit there, mouth hanging open, all shocked.

Crap. Here's hoping when it does come back up that we don't suffer from another Massive Loss of Old Posts...

Response by poster: Okay--the thing that is really bothering me......why hasn't she shown up here to say anything. I am actually worried, it doesn't feel quite right. Maybe she can't get online at all, I don't know. I wish someone had her phone number to see is all is alright. Plus, she's due....like...next month, right? ARGH!
posted by codeofconduct at 9:52 PM on May 14, 2005

Response by poster: Plus, can't talk to her on KoL as she has let her account lapse (dammit!)!!

I hate worrying.

tracicle has gmail, but I can't remember the address, since I would look for it on mofi. But there are a ton of people coming in and out of #mofirc, if you are looking for company.

Best answer: What happens now?

Wolof has it. I went to a lovely 30th birthday out of town last night, thank you, and got home about an hour ago to discover the server message. We're resolving it, but the server is based in Michigan, where it's 2am.

You guys are so cool and addicted and I can't believe someone made an FPP to Mefi. I'm never going on holiday again. :)

IIRC, the last time this happened it wasn't a bandwidth issue at all, but rather the failure of something called "resin" in the server.

Response by poster: I'm glad to hear it was something fairly trivial. Thank God for triviality!!
posted by codeofconduct at 3:08 PM on May 15, 2005

So that's why MoFi is so responsive - the server is local (to me). You have monkeys in Michigan, Tracicle. You know who to call if you need some heads knocked around in the server room.
posted by caution live frogs at 5:22 AM on May 16, 2005

I disagree. Triviality is killing our nation's children and turning previously law-abiding right-wing politicians into homosexual bondage queens that breath fire and have acid poo-poo.
