Mac to PC Hard Drive Switch

Can I switch an external hard drive from a Mac to a PC?
I have a 250 GB external hard drive for my Mac with Carbon Copy Cloner software on it. I need a bigger hard drive for my Mac. The existing hard drive size is fine for my PC laptop. I know that the drive would need different software on it to back up the PC. Can I make this switch, moving the existing external drive from PC to Mac? Do I simply reformat the existing drive and then download software from the web compatible with the PC? Are there any freeware recommendations? Any advice would be appreciated.

Best answer: D'oh! Clonezilla, sorry! Clinozinna is a venereal disease, my mistake...

MacDrive 8 has a 7-day free trial, which I found was more than enough time to get everything I wanted off my Mac drive and onto my PC before reformatting the drive.

Clinozinna is probably a good alternative.
