Canada TV series

Help us find this Canadian children's TV show. "It's Canadian, and they all wore beanies" "if it's Canadian, don't you mean touks?" heaps more half remembered details:

So, apparently my sister and I used to watch a Canadian TV show, but we don't remember it. These are the notes I took as we talked about it.

It was set in Canada, on a bay or the sea. It potentially has "bay" in the title. It has a pier that the characters would walk out onto. (All the time) Beautiful scenery.

Maybe a fishing village? There might be a boat?

It is a children's adventure kind of show, not a comedy or sitcom.

Live action. No puppets. no animation.

dolphins (maybe)

two main male protagonists. (at least one). A quirky older guy.
Old timer. had the wisdom of age. "Alternative"

set in the 70s ??

Like Sea Change, but set in Canada. (Sea Change is an Australian TV show from the turn of the century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SeaChange)

wasn't a search and rescue

aimed at kids

good quality Canadian Producer - equivalent of the ABC (in Australia)

TV series, not a movie. not a cartoon.

Not: Red Green, Tool time, Flipper, Free Willy, Fly Away Home. Not Gilmore Girls.
on Googling, we found "Danger Bay" but that didn't seem to ring any bells.

The quote that started this whole thing:
"do you remember that TV series you used to watch that was Canadian and they all wore beanies?" - this is after talking about Happy Days, and jumping the shark; if it helps trigger your brain!

we're in Australia, but grew up in Bolivia with heaps of American/Canadian/British shows on Cable.

Whatever this show is, it sounds awesome and I want to see it again!

Is it Adventures In Rainbow Country? From this link: http://www.tvarchive.ca/database/16185/adventures_in_rainbow_country/details/

Adventures in Rainbow Country concerned the modern-day adventures of Billy Williams (Stephen Cottier), a 14-year-old Canadian boy growing up on the rugged and beautiful north shore of Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Island and the fabulous mining and bush country of the north.

This used to air on YTV in the 1990s...oof...I couldn't stand it personally :-) Maybe the TVArchive.ca website can help jog your memory - looks like loads of info there on other shows!

The Beachcombers is Canadian, set by the water, in the 70s, has a quirky older guy. But I don't think it was aimed at kids. Might that be it?

Could it have been Danger Bay?

Don't remember beanies though...

I think this sounds like Beachcombers -- especially as Relic always wore a toque.

And that would make this the second time in the last 24 hours that Beachcombers has come up.

Forest Rangers?

It's definitely Danger Bay.

And they're tuques. IIRC, though, that series was set mostly in summer, so... Relic always wore one on The Beachcombers, which was set in the same sort of place, aired in the same period on the same network, so it's possible there's been some conflation.

I was thinking Rainbow Country, too.

Response by poster: hmm. I don't remember any of these. Maybe ignore the "set in the 70s" bit?

I suspect you're mixing up The Beachcombers and Danger Bay. Because they were both Canadian and frequently at the beach in BC, it would be easy for a child to think they were the same show or at least to recall them that way later. Both shows were heavily exported internationally.

Response by poster: Pretty sure it isn't Beach Combers or Danger Bay.

Danger Bay doesn't seem to have a quirky wise older guy.

Thanks for the answers so far though!

First thought on hearing BC set with a dolphin and an older wise guy was either Danger Bay or Beachcombers or a memory-almagamation of the two.

Danger Bay had (I think) a dolphin and (I know) a marine biologist single-dad with two teenage kids (a son and a daughter). The themes were very environmental and I think they had a pier.

My own memory of the The Beachcombers is much more vague, and mostly I remember the setting and the character named Relict - an older, crochety man, who was a foil to the more calm main character. By the end of the series, the main character would have seemed like a older, wise man - it ran for 18 years.
