What is the title of this movie about two children living alone during the Great Depression?

I'm trying to remember the title of a movie set during the Great Depression. Two children are left in an apartment or hotel for the Summer while their father leaves to search for work. The most memorable scene involved the suicide of an elderly neighbor late in the movie.

I saw this movie several times 15 to 25 years ago.

I believe the children were brothers, several years apart. Their father left them with a little money for food, but the rent was unpaid. They were eventually forced to keep the door locked and barricaded to prevent being evicted.

An elderly couple lived across the hall. They had all of their meals delivered to their room and gave the impression of wealth. Near the end of the movie there was a suicide. The gentleman had cut his arm and left it in the sink with the water running. The blood eventually overflowed the sink and ran under the door into the hallway. The children saw this and found him.

Eventually the father returned with a new car and a job in another city. Because of the unpaid rent, the family lowered all of their possessions through the apartment window, and then left for their new life.

I've tried searching Google and IMDB but I haven't found anything that looks familial. Does anyone recognize this plot?

Best answer: Not sure about the neighbor suicide, but it sounds like King of the Hill?

Sounds like King of the Hill to me, too. In one scene, did the children cut out pictures of food and pretend to eat a meal?

Response by poster: It's definitely King of the Hill. Thank you both. Because I had misremembered so many of the details I originally ignored it based on the imdb plot summary, but I took a second look. Many of the specifics are coming back to me and I found several clips including the suicide that confirmed it.

Thanks.
