Help me identify this Sci-Fi short story: bio-nano-tech, Africa, refugee camp.

A few years back, I read a short story, set in the near future, in a refugee camp in Africa (I think), told from the point of view of one of the refugees, a girl? What had made them refugees was that there area that had been colonized by a sort of alien green-goo, bio-nano-tech. It was very vivid as to life in a refugee camp, and at the end I think the protagonist wound up inside the off-limits area with said green goo and realized it was some sort of paradise.

This is all very sketchy, and I might have gotten all the details wrong but I remember how much I liked the story and would like to re-read it and anything else by the same author.

Mike Resnick situates a lot of his fiction in Africa. Your story memory wasn't ringing any immediate bells and he's rather prolific... So here's a link to his isfdb bibliography if AskMe doesn't come through and you're up for some exploration yourself.

I read a similar story in one of the Gardner Dozier's years best sci fi, don't remember when, but Resnick is ringing some bells with Kirinyaga.

It's been a while, but I think in the story thats what they called the alien area?

I've got this story somewhere in an anthology. It was very good.

If only I could remember what it was... I'll go rummage now.

It's a story that appears in The Apex Book of World Sci Fi. "Transcendence Express", by Jetse de Vries. Google fu is not tracking down any significant English-language web presence for de Vries or this story aside from the amazon link to purchase the whole anthology. Sorry.

According to ISFDb it's also available as an Escape Pod episode.

Best answer: That was tricky.

Ian McDonald has written a novel, called 'Evolution's Shore' or 'Chaga', which has also been split up and published as various short stories. One story is called 'Towards Kilimanjaro'. The short story I have is called "Tendeleo's Story" and matches your description.

It's in "The Mammoth Book of Best New SF 14", published in 2001, ISBN 1-84119-404-2

Binary Ape That's the story I was thinking of! I'm sure it was in a Gardner Dozios' ( italics for earlier spelling error) Years Best Sci Fi as well.

Jetse's on Twitter as Shineanthology if you want to ask him about it. I do remember one of his stories set in Africa but it didn't have the green thing.
