What's the easiest way for my iPad2 to connect to the 3G signal on my iPhone?

I have to admit here, I'm pretty dense when it comes to concepts like tethering and jailbreaking. Googling around, I still can't seem to find the information I need in a language I can understand.

Basically I have an older iPhone 3. I recently bought an iPad2, but opted to not get G3 for it, but sometimes regret it. Sometimes I'd like to be able to leech the signal from my iPhone but not sure if it's legal or what the technical hurdles are. Thanks for any advice on this newb-ish question.

T.D.'s right - without jailbreaking one or the other (actually, probably both...), by design you can't do this. I have iPad1 with 3G and I have never once regretted springing for the onboard connection. If you purchased your iPad at an Apple retail store within the past 30 days or so, I'm willing to bet Apple would let you return the WiFi version and get a 3G by paying the difference...

Assuming you have a 3GS or later iPhone, you can subscribe to internet tethering for $25/month.

More information in this thread:

I realized it was probably time for a MyFi. Then realized I didn't even know how to spell that, let alone what it meant.

Oh, sorry. I didn't see that you had an iPhone 3G. Tethering won't work with that.

Response by poster: Ack sorry, I do have 3GS! Didnt know it made a difference.

Best answer: Yea, if it is still connected to service, AT&T or Verizon (or probably your local carrier, if you're outside the US) would happily sell you tethering for $20 or $25 a month.

Best answer: If you jailbreak your iPhone (these guides are decent) and use Cydia to install MyWi OnDemand, you can turn your iPhone into a hotspot so that your iPad can connect to it over WiFi.

FYI, AT&T are blocking tethering from jailbroken phones. You'll need to go the legit route, or trade the iPad in for a 3G model.

Drea is right but you don't even need the hotspot; with MyWi it'll talk over Bluetooth automagicly when there's not a wifi signal handy.

Jailbreaking has some downsides but for turning my wifi iPad into always-on it's been fantastic.

AT&T Tells Free Tethering Customers It’s Time to Pay Up

On the iPhone, for example, the hack MyWi has been a popular tool for “tethering” the handset’s internet connection for free, and just recently users of MyWi reported receiving text messages and e-mails from AT&T requiring them to “update” their plans.

“Well, that was fun while it lasted,” a MyWi user posted in a forum. “It was a good 3 years. Goodbye iPhone tethering.”

For what it's worth, I've continued to use MyWi since AT&T started "catching" it and have never received a notification from them, and I do not have a tethering plan.

I have two guesses as to why:

1. The whole story is totally overblown and AT&T only detected some people or something

2. Because I primarily, like 80% of the time, use the tethering only for my iPad, AT&T can't detect another iOS device as being "tethered," and when I have used it for my laptop I was just lucky?

Same here. Still using MyWi and have not heard from AT&T. Again mostly use it for iPad, occasionally laptop. Also stream pandora on my iPhone for 2-6 hours a day at work so my data usage has always been high.
