What to write in wet concrete?
May 11, 2011 11:22 AM   Subscribe

What should I write in newly poured concrete? Quick, before it dries!

Today we are getting two new concrete stairs poured, one set off the front of my porch and one off the side. The forms will be removed today, and by the time I get to them, they will still be damp enough for me to scratch into. I'm planning to write something simple, just on the side so it's not terribly obvious... but what?! Definitely "2011" and possibly my and my partner's initials, but does anyone have other clever suggestions? The available spaces are just a few feet square, so no lengthy screeds please.

We own the house, so don't worry - your ideas are not aiding and abetting in the defacing of property.

You and your partner's initials, in a heart, with today's date.

Classic, never goes out of style.

Before reading the 'more inside', I was going to suggest The Phaistos Disk, but it's a bit complicated...

How about "LIFT ME UP!"?

How about a penny? I found one in the corner of one of my patios and thought "Ain't that sweet. I'll do that some day."

Other alternative: a life-like footprint of some awesome beast (true story: the night our concrete stairs dried, a moose stamped on them. Two eternal moose prints, free of charge).

My mom has little concrete slabs with my hand prints and foot prints, age six (and my sister, age two) with the name and date, Graumann's Theater style.

I always thought it would be fun to have my handprint with my name and my grownup age at the time, too. "Patti, Age 37".

We poured a foundation for a basketball net when I was a kid, and we all put our handprints in the concrete. It was great to go back to it while I was growing up to try to fit my (now larger) hand in my original print.

Alternatively,

Ironmouth 's classic idea (your initials in a heart) is great! How big is the area? Can you maybe make the heart out of one of each of your hands --- upside down, with your forefingers & thumbs touching, is sorta heart-ish --- and put the initials in that?

I like curiousZ's suggestion of pressing a leaf into it. I always love looking at the (accidental) leaf prints on sidewalks, and an intentional one could be really cool (pick a really awesome leaf/make sure it leaves a perfect print). That, with the date and your initials, would be awesome.

Just press a 2011 penny in the corner of it. My family has done this for generations for whatever concrete work they've done.

It helps out down the road for remembering when a project was done.

I say take this (and every) opportunity to falsify, or at least muddle, the historical record. Something like, "K. Cobain - 1991". Something obviously false NOW, but plausible, and something that will potentially gain credibilty as the years go on.

If you plan to live there forever and ever, go ahead with the intials. If not, just put the date.

Our garage floor has names and a heart from past owners etched in the concrete of the threshold and geeze it really is obnoxious looking.

I disagree; I think these touches former owners put into their work are cool as hell.

Hand prints are nice but the concrete will probably be set too much if they've stripped the forms. Names and date at a minimum though.

"shake before use."

(Also, I now remember that in my new house, there is the heel of a rubber boot in a concrete patch, but that was an accident. And it's ugly.)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I settled on a 2011 penny in one set of stairs, and our initials on the other. I love the ideas of hand prints, leaf prints etc. but like Mitheral said, by the time the forms were off the concrete was too firm to take detailed prints.
