A friend of mine asked about upcomming concerts in my area. Where can I find local concert listings?

Is there any kind of general way to find out about upcomming concerts

You could try upcoming.org for your metro, but it would help if we knew where either you or your friend are located.

It depends on where you live and what kind of concerts you're interested in. If you have an alt weekly, it will have concert listings. If you know of venues already, their sites, if they have them, will have their upcoming shows. There may also be special-purpose listings in your area, like this one in Chicago.

Most places have local alternative weekly papers that are usually the best source of listings, since they'll include stuff that's too indy to be ticketed by ticketmaster. For example, in Toronto, that's eye.net and nowtoronto.com.

Response by poster: Me and my friend live in Ames, Iowa. But the Des Moines area would also be of intrest.

delmoi -- Pollstar and Ticketmaster are usually good for most large, touring acts, but for smaller, local shows your best bet is , as others have said, the local alt-weekly. I tend to make it a habit, whenever visiting any city, to hunt down the local weekly to get an idea of what's worth doing at that point in time. It's like a free, realtime Lonely Planet Guide, and most of them have a website. If you don't know which ones cover your city, go to your regional quick, cheap food joint populated by college-age kids and see what free weekly papers are available (usually on stands or tables near the entrance)

yours seems to be Des Moines CityView

Iowa State University paper, "Iowa State Daily". Maybe the print version is more informative?

Get a schedule for the shows at the.. umm.. Body shop, or whatever they call the little cafe/music space in the building that used to be a hotel.. (vague, I know) Schools pay well, so there are likely to be some cool shows there.

"Memorial Union’s Maintenance Shop, Ames’ oldest continuously operating nightclub. The M-Shop, created as a live music venue in 1974 upon closing of the Union’s old (real) maintenance shop, has over the years hosted acts such as Muddy Waters, Chick Corea, War, Soul Asylum, and Smashing Pumpkins."

That's it, but they're not having any shows until August.
