Question: WMV to MPEG conversion tool?

Can anyone suggest a tool to convert WMV to MPEG format? A tool that is preferably freeware, though licensed software would be great too.

This is just for a friend's school project. He asked me if I knew of any tools to convert WMV to MPEG, after searching Google and SourceForge without find any specific conversion tools, I though I'd ask the MetaFilter community.

It depends on the version of WMV, but ffmpeg will probably do the trick (it definitely converts asf files). Also, for Mac OS, ffmpegX.

WinAvi. It's not free or Free, but it's a quick one button program that does the job.
It's win32 only though.

mplayer (rather, mencoder, which is part of mplayer) will do that. But it incorporates a bunch of ffmpeg code, so it might be easier to just use ffmpeg if that works.

TMpegenc. Doom9 has a guide. Use the VCD instructions and you should be fine. It will still look pretty bad though.

Free.

mpeg1, as in VCDs? I gave my mum TMPGEnc and she finds it easy enough. There's also a plugin to allow it to do Quicktime.

It can do mpeg2 too, but that costs after a month of use.

OldVersion has VirtualDub 1.3c which could do the job.

Xilisoft Video Converter is free for clips under 5 minutes and supports a ton of formats. I used it for a short clip the other day, and it seemed to work pretty well.
