I am looking for contemporary movies (say the last 20 years or so) set in Mexico City.

Mexico City (2000)
Nacho Libre (2006)
Frida (made in 2002 but depicts an older era)

chrchr beat me to Amores Perros, so I'll add Frida to the mix. I believe that bits of Y Tu Mama Tambien -- esp. in the first part of the movie, were also set in Mexico City.

Oh and because I love Mexico City and was interested in this question, I did a search on IMDB and discovered that there is a movie coming out this year on the Tlatelolco massacre. Could be interesting, but I would have preferred a Mexico than Hollywood version.

Some of the outdoor city scenes from The Running Man were filmed there.. Though it misses the 20 year rule..

I love films shot in Mexico City. I loved how Mexico City looks in Amores Perros. The following are shot and take place in Mexico City:

Cine Mexicana
Duck Season
Rudo y Cursi (parts in DF)
Y Tu Mama Tambien (beginning and end are in the DF, the secret beach is in Huatulco, Oax)

American Films
The Matador
Man on Fire (2004)

The scene in Total Recall in the metro system was shot in Mexico City's Metro.

Rodriguez's El Mariachi and Desperado did not take place in Mexico City. El Mariachi was shot mostly in Cd Acuña. Nacho Libre was shot in Los Angeles, CA. I haven't seen the film so I don't know if it was to take place in Mexico City.

so sorry! I only read "Mexico". I am going to back away from this thread now, slightly mortified.

seconding The Matador!
Possibly The Mexican, as well, though it's a road movie and I don't recall if parts of it were set in Mexico City or not. (It also depends on your Julia Roberts tolerance levels, of which mine are quite low.)

Romeo + Juliet (the Leonardo DiCaprio / Claire Danes one) was filmed in Mexico City. Still set in "Verona" though.
