I think it's going to depend somewhat on what nice means for you.

I value a comfortable neighbourhood with trees and some peace and quiet that is walking distance to the centre of things. You definitely can rent in the CBD, though depending on the street you may or may not like it - the CBD feels a little sketchy in places. Other neighbourhoods that I particularly like are Larrakeyah, The Gardens (Mindil Beach) and Parap (Parap Village Markets). Older houses, older neighbourhoods, totally walking or biking distance to the CBD. I don't get a kick out of the Casuarina area - lots of strip malls, can't walk to the city.

Check out Domain and Gumtree to see some of what's on the market right now. Might give you a better feel for what your options are and what matters to you.

Response by poster: thanks, I think I'll give google earth a whirl, I have no clue about the geography of Darwin.

You can get a fairly good idea of it with Google maps and street view. I'm up here for the week, so if there's any particular neighbourhood you start looking into, I'm happy to swing by and check out the vibe of the place.
