Substitute for discontinued protein powder?

Seems Muscle Milk no longer makes "26g protein powder, pure, isolated & concentrated milk protein". Anyone know of substitutes with the same high protein, good taste and texture when mixed with milk? I'd prefer not to do trial and error if I can help it. More within.

I found this product a couple months ago at Costco. It was the first protein shake I ever used and I like it a lot. I use it to start my day in combo with my morning aerobics. There are many glowing comments on the Costco site but at the top it says the product is no longer available. I search the Muscle Milk site and it doesn't even come back with any error message. I've got about 1/3 of the container left.

I did the requisite askmefi search on "muscle milk 26g protein powder" and the most recent hit was in 2008. Obviously my question is about what is available now and what people think would be a good equivalent.

I am not a body builder, just someone who decided to have one meal a day through protein shake, and decided on the powder form because it's cheaper. FYI this shake tasted good (to me) as long as I blended it well, so I wouldn't want recommendations that had a medicinal or chemical taste.

The "Supplement Facts" on the container says, per 34g scoop: 130 calories, 2g fat, 15mg chol., 3g carb, 26g protein, 200 mg sodium, 230 mg potassium. Ingredients say it's a proprietary blend of calcium/sodium caseinate, whey protein isolate/concentrate, milk protein isolate, glutamine, casein and lots of other stuff, plus cocoa powder, safflower & canola oil, maltodestrin, flavors, salt, sucralose, soy lecithin, etc.

Here it is at Netrition. I've ordered things from them before and they're a good company.

Response by poster: Thanks La Petite, that looks close but I think it must be a variation since it seems to have less protein and more fat (I had to allow for their nutrition info being 2 scoops and my container has it based on one scoop, but I think I did the math right). Granted I am not looking for an exact match, and appreciate the recommendation for a good company to order from...I'll just leave the question open to see if there are other suggestions.

It appears to be available through Amazon's marketplace from at least three sellers with a photo that matches the one in your Costco link.

Best answer: Honestly, it's just normal protein powder--do a search for "Protein Power" and you'll get a million hits.

Trueprotein has every protein option you could want. Whey protein concentrate is cheap and simple. I've tried about a dozen of the flavors and they've all been good.

A protein powder with similar specs is ON Whey. I personally use this one and find it to be great tasting. You can find sampler packs on Amazon as well. It doesn't clump much, either.

Best answer: Hopefully you can find a source for this your favorite protein powder. If it has been discontinued and becomes unavailable I suggest you try Designer Whey proteins. They are tops in taste, ease of dissolving, and reasonable price. It mixes well with milk and tastes great that way or with water. I like to add it to breakfast cereal and for this I think the Vanilla tastes best. If you have a Trader Joes near you I have seen it there at quite good prices.

Response by poster: I was out at Sunday brunch and came back to many more answers. And with many different avenues to explore.

In defense of my question, since I've never used protein powder before a couple months ago I didn't know much about the subject. I have seen mentions on the Web about some having too little protein and too much fat, and others have said some mix poorly or have a bad taste.

I'll try the Cytosport customer service number during the week, and I'll also research the personal favorites put forth by others.

Thanks everyone!

ON is generally one of the better protein powder with a pretty close nutritional profile. I get it online since it's a million times cheaper than going to GNC.

Word of warning on trueprotein, they had a leak of customer/billing information a while back.

Supposedly it was their payment processing company that got breached, not their site. I had my credit card info stolen, which was a bummer, but my bank took care of it and I wasn't out any money. I've continued to order from them because they've got the most options for significantly cheaper than anything else -- WPC for $5.69/pound.
