Trying to replay a game from my childhood

I'm trying to remember the name of a computer game from the Win95 era. Mech warrior style robots flying around islands (aerial view, like Command and Conquer). Sound familiar?

It may not have been a very popular game, but my brother and I played it a lot one summer. It may have been on a "1,000 Game" compilation CD. We played "Marshmallow Duel" and this game a lot, and I think they were both on the same CD.

You would fly around the map destroying the enemy robots. It was composed primarily of islands (I remember a lot of water). I'm not sure if you upgraded your army, but I recall something about "gold" robots - like you unlocked them or something.

Response by poster: Total Annihilation looks fun, but I don't see the "gold" units that I remembered playing with.

Metal Marines sounds reaaaaalllly familiar and looks very close. Gameplay on Youtube is bringing back some memories. The flying missile seems familiar.

Also, Wikipedia states the following about Metal Marines:

"It's also possible to upgrade the Metal Marines using "Build Up" icon. Their color will change to Silver from Gold."

That is a good sign! Trying to find a way to play it to determine for sure. It was this game that lead me to love RTS games (Starcraft, C&C, etc.)

Response by poster: Ok, so it's most definitely Metal Marines. thank you thank you thank you!

It's amazing what emotions can be uncovered by simply playing a game from the past. It's exactly as I remembered it.

How did you think of Metal Marines? Did you used to play it?
