60-70s train film

I've been searching for the name of a film I watched several years ago on late night TV. The film takes place on a train. In one scene the two main characters grease the tracks so that the train is forced to slow down, allowing them to climb on board. Near the end, there is a bloody battle, and the train guard's hand is chopped off with an axe. Can anyone help in identifying this film?

Of the title, all I remember is that it was 'The something'. The film was from the 60s or the 70s. I've looked through all the titles beginning with 'The' on imdb, but none of them ring a bell.

Best answer: Sounds like Emperor of the North with Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine.

Runaway Train is the name you're looking for, I think.

Response by poster: Thanks mischief, Emperor of the North was it. I don't know where 'The...' came from though, sorry...

Thanks to selfnoise and n9 for their help!
