What are some good songs about being awesome?

God, all the songs I have are about self-pity! Jesus.

Do you have good songs (any genre) about the singer being awesome, up to and including being egomaniacal? "I'm awesome" is preferable to "I'm awesome and you suck" but the latter is also acceptable.

i.e., Time to Pretend by MGMT, Poker Face by Lady Gaga, I Did it My Way, Soak Up the Sun, etc

Or the person being sung to, as long as it's not a love song.
i.e., Vienna by Billy Joel

extra points for songs sung by women!

"I Sing the Body Electric" from the movie "Fame".

There was a great Sesame Street song called "Me," sung in both English and Spanish.

You really want to explore rap / hip-hop. There are several iconic pieces like this. It's a genre trope.

Picture Me Rollin', for example. But there are hundreds more.

Two off the top of my head: Des'ree's You got to be is more of a "come on be awesome", but it's very much not a self-pitying song. Defying Gravity from "Wicked" fits the bill.

Gin-Soaked Boy - Divine Comedy (for a gloriously, poetically goofy tongue-in-cheek take on the genre)

I Wanna Be Adored and I Am the Resurrection - the Stone Roses ("Resurrection" is in "I am awesome but you suck" territory)

Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield (greatest "you can do it, you're awesome, we're ALL awesome!" song ever)

Pretty Vacant - The Sex Pistols (in a great snotty "fuck you if you can't take the joke" sort of way)

I Am an Animal - Pete Townshend (more complex, lyrically, than just "I'm awesome!" but it does contain one of the world's greatest lines: "I will be immersed / Queen of the FUCKING UNIVERSE!" Can't find a good video or complete audio of it online, unfortunately)

depending on your political inclinations... Plenty Tough, Union Made - The Mekons

Peacock Suit, Wild Wood - Paul Weller

As the writer of The Onion A.V. Club's series Then That's What They Called Music! series states, this describes pretty much Beyoncé's (and therefore by extension Destiny's Child) entire oeuvre. Well, actually, he says the core message is "Fuck you, I'm awesome", but hey. Take Independent Woman, for instance.

Here are some that jump out at me looking down my iTunes library. (Hence the alphabetical-by-artist arrangement.) Links mostly to YouTube, with a couple of MP3 samples here and there. And like some other respondents, I've kind of expanded to include "THINGS are awesome" as well as "I am awesome" and "You are awesome" - Though I've *starred the ones that I think stick more to the original question.

Atom And His Package - I Am Downright Amazed At What I Can Destroy With Just a Hammer, and Mustache T.V.

Barr - Half of Two Times Two.

Beastie Boys - *The Maestro.

Ben Folds Five - *One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces. Also *Philosophy, *Underground, and *Sports & Wine (Though those three are more satire aimed at different types of people who overestimate their own awesomeness.)

Ben Harper - Gold to Me.

Billy Bragg - *Milkman of Human Kindness.

Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet.

Blind Melon - Life Ain't So Shitty.

Cat Power - Free.

David Gray - Babylon.

Death Cab for Cutie - Passenger Seat.

Decemberists - *Rise to Me, and July July, and Sons and Daughters.

Donovan - *Mellow Yellow.

Eels - P.S. You Rock My World, and Blinking Lights (For Me), and Hey Man (Now You're Really Living), and Mr. E's Beautiful Blues.

Erin McKeown - *Queen of Quiet, and Fast As I Can.

Feist - I Feel It All.

The Format - *I'm Actual.

Frank Zappa - *Dancin' Fool.
Gorillaz (feat. Del tha Funkee Homosapien) - Rock the House.

James Brown - *Super Bad, and

Johnny Cash - *A Boy Named Sue.

Junior Senior - *Dynamite, and *Rhythm Bandits, and *Go Junior, Go Senior. (In fact, they were pretty much a band who just wrote fun songs about being a band who plays fun songs.)

Matt Singer - *Dynamic Public Speaker.

Mike Doughty - *Busting Up a Starbucks, and Tremendous Brunettes.

Modest Mouse - *We've Got Everything.

Mr. Bungle - *Vanity Fair.

Nick Drake - One of These Things First.

Muddy Waters - *Hoochie Coochie Man.

Oasis - She's Electric.

OK Go - *You're So Damn Hot.

The Pogues - *I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day.

The Postal Service - Such Great Heights, and Brand New Colony.

Prince - *Let's Go Crazy.

R.E.M. - *Wake Up Bomb.

Radiohead - *You and Whose Army?, and *Talk Show Host.

Rufus Wainwright (with Martha Wainwright & Teddy Thompson) - *One Man Guy. (Cover - written by Rufus & Martha's Dad, Loudon Wainwright III.)

Ryan Adams - *Gonna Make You Love Me.

The Smiths - *This Charming Man.

Spoon - *The Way We Get By.

Squirrel Nut Zippers - *Got My Own Thing Now.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Me and Mia, and Walking to Do.

(sooo many from) They Might Be Giants - *Extra Savoir-Faire, and *Hypnotist of Ladies, and *The Cap'm, and *The Mesopotamians (great video), and *Meet James Ensor, and *Kiss Me, Son of God, and *Bangs, and perhaps best of all, *Dr. Worm.

Tom Waits - *Big in Japan.

Weezer - *Buddy Holly.

The Who - *Pinball Wizard.

Wilco - *The Late Greats, and *Wilco (The Song).

And FINALLY, exponentially more legend-building than any other song ever: *GEORGE WASHINGTON* by Brad Neely.
