I'm turning 30 in October, and I want to do something interesting to celebrate. However, I don't want to make the guests have to spend a lot of money or travel long distances, and they are of varying ages and physical limitations. I'm thinking of something along the lines of "How to Host a Murder," but I'm open to pretty much anything.

The guests will range in age from mid-twenties to mid-eighties, with possibly two very small babies thrown in.
I don't mind doing a lot of preparation, and I like cooking and making up things (we did an elaborate treasure hunt for my cousin's birthday last month).
I live in San Diego, if that makes a difference.

I saw something really great once - A guy turned 40, and to celebrate he sent his 40 closest friends $10, with the requirement that they come back with a written story, an interesting gift, or an experience for his birthday party. They could combine cash but they couldn't use more, and they had to do something that felt uncomrfortable/awkward/a stretch.

He was the kind of guy who could get away with it - wrote a great letter, had a rep for traveling/adventure/meeting everyone in the world/big personality.

I thought it was really creative. I personally spent MY 30th birthday saying, "I'm not upset! Everything's fine, I'm turning 30, I'm not upset! It's no big deal! Hey, let's entertain ourselves frantically so I can forget that I'm not upset!" and then laughing at myself the next day.

Probably 10 to 15 guests, not counting babies.

Rent a restaurant/bar/pub/whatever with a huge tv and surround sound
or
Rent a huge tv with the full works
Buy a roll of white dot stickers, red dot stickers, and black dot stickers
Wrap the place in tin foil/plastic sheeting
Serve space-age type food
Require people to shout out "Renew! Renew! Renew!" whenever they see you.
