How can I put .m4v video files onto my ipod without using iTunes?

Hello, perhaps the hive mind can help me with an irritating little problem.
I recently ditched windows in favour of Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop (best decision I ever made, it actually works now). My problem has to do with adding video files to a 5th gen ipod without the use of iTunes.

I've managed to update it with music and other audio files just fine using rhythmbox, but I haven't found a way to add videos yet. I have a bunch of m4v files that I'm trying move over to the ipod. I tried using gtkpod, but when I tell it to add the folder/files it immediately skips through all of the files saying that it isn't able to upload them.

Is this a file-format problem? Am I going to have to convert every video to .mp4 or something in order to upload them? Or is there another linux program out there that can work with .m4v

Thanks a bunch for any insights you may have!

I've been able to transfer video using Dropbox maybe that can work?

M4V indicates you're using DRM'd content for iTunes. Thats the whole point of the M4V container. You're likely going to need to transfer with iTunes. (If they are not DRM'd you can try just changing the extension to mp4 - usually video file extensions don't mean as much as other file extensions)

Floola worked fine for me yesterday putting an m4v created by handbrake onto a 1st generation video ipod.

It's not the greatest program in the world, but it does the job reasonably well on my 10.04 box.

M4V indicates you're using DRM'd content for iTunes.

This is not accurate. While m4v does include copy protection, it is not required.

Yes this is why I said "indicates copy protection" not "means copy protection", there are two primary enhancements to MP4 covered in the M4V wrapper one is DRM - the other is for AAC audio. Its also why I said "If they are not DRM'd ...."
