How to track down old news headlines.

Help me track down past news headlines/articles for my daughter's baby book.

My daughter was born September 11, 2010. I didn't realize at the time that one of the things for her baby book was news headlines/events.

I would obviously like to avoid the whole 9/11 thing. Does anyone have any resources for getting news headlines without paying huge amounts of money for past articles on major news sites?

Extra points if the stories are nerdy or tech related.

Maybe try the Newseum site.

Best answer: Most public libraries subscribe to ProQuest. or try newspapers.com.

Response by poster: Thank you! I didn't even consider the library!

Apart from databases of newspaper articles, most large libraries should have the physical copies of major newspapers going back at least that far. Try the central branch of the library system you belong to.

Looks like it was a pretty slow news day per the Memorandum archive from that day.

At our library, we have a database for our city's major newspaper that you can search limited to just one date, as well as "digital microfilm" that goes back a few years. As well as actual microfilm. (Actual papers are only kept a few months. Your mileage may vary.) If you already have a library card, you might be able to access something similar through your library's website.

Google's archive has stories from that day. I just did a search for *, and that seems to have brought all the articles from that day up. (the * wildcard can be used in google searches like "John Jacob * schmidt")

I think you should throw in this one: "Lady GaGa's fans blocked from website forum after copycat claims sweep the internet: The singers website went into protective mode this week after a meltdown on the sites message board."

And somehow I'm betting you end up telling her like "see, there used to be these things called message boards, and people would go on there and type for hours on end".

Also, if you run across any headlines that you need access to, memail me and I can probably get them for you.

One site that would have been great is pressdisplay. But their search only goes back 3 months. They have a flash version of the actual newspapers that you can flip through. Would have been a bonanza, but October 25th is the earliest it goes back from what I can tell.

Thank you! I didn't even consider the library!

Always consider the library!

If you want to go the physical route, pretty much every newspaper sells back issues. We got a copy of the paper for each of our kids' birthdays.

Also here is the NY Times search for 9/11/2010
