What cartoon is this?

[80s French-speaking cartoon filter] A series/episode where a young boy trying to reunite with his party is stranded alone on a hostile planet at the end of a show. What was it?

Only details I can remember: most of the episode (probably series as well) is about two parties searching for each other across space. Protagonist in party 1 is a boy (young man?), other protagonists in party 2 include older guy, at least one with beards.
In this specific episode, there is some confusion about timelines (time travel?). Then boy is isolated from his party on a planet; trying to find a way to get back.
My most distinct memory: at the end of the scene, the boy is lying (sleeping/exhausted?) alone on the floor in a forest-like environment (green environment, with a pond?) on that planet. Members of party 1/2 see him from spaceship though some remote vision device. Then fade-off, part/episode ends.

This is a memory from early childhood: sitting in front of the TV watching a show that I would usually didn't watch, but captivated by the story. Then show ends on a cliffhanger, and I never watch this series again so I am left frustrated not knowing the end of the story. This memory is haunting me and I need to resolve this by remembering the context and the plot. Please help!

Some context: I viewed that show on a French-speaking channel, but outside of France. (Possibly French cartoon, but also possibly a co-production with France?) It did not look like Japanese anime. After 1980 and before 1990.

Some youtube / wikipedia hints vaguely at Jayce and wheeled warriors (FR: Jayce et les Conquérants de la lumière) but I can't seem to find any detailed episode plots to check, so I'm not sure. Anyone know that series? Are there other shows from that time with space travels and dual parties?

Alternatively, what method should I use on the vast internet to search for this kind of stuff, short of AskMeFi?

Best answer: Les Maîtres du temps/Time Masters?

I haven't actually seen it and it's a movie, but the time period/basic plot seems right.

Most of it seems to be on YouTube if you want to check it out.

Check the visuals for Ulysses 31, it's usually the answer to french space animation.

I have no idea why I gave you the crappy link, sorry! Here's the intro. Better.

Response by poster: The Time Masters indeed. I had watched it entirely. The ending is so sad I had blacked it out -- now crying again after all these years!

Thanks darksong. Yay to MeFi.
