How to buy land in Ecuador safely

Hey, I'm an Aussie that wants to buy land or a house in Ecuador, is it safe, how do I protect myself, and where should I engage a solicitor for conveyancey - here or South America itself? (*asking for a family member).

I think it should be perfectly safe...there are towns and cities that must be easy enough to buy from. And I'd go to South America, unless you happen to know someone who's familiar with and up to date with Ecuadorian real estate. I know they eat guinea pigs there haha. But it's not like the country is a wasteland where Ecuadorians are waiting behind bushes to jump you at any minute. Just find someone who knows Spanish and you'll probably be all set.
