why is this news?

Can someone in journalism/news/media studies explain why an event like this needs to be public.

It is pretty common for national news media to report on events in the lives of celebrities, including tragic events like the sudden death of one of their children. That seems like a very appropriate and factual report; with what aspect of it are you taking issue?
