The good pirate needs a friendly name
December 16, 2010 10:49 PM   Subscribe

Recommendations for a nickname/pseudonym for business purposes.

My good friend is a painter. Interior/exterior painting + handyman. He has an eye patch over one eye...unfortunate accident. Bow hunting, if memory serves.

Something that has stuck is 'pirate', but that image doesn't really fit well with being a reputable service provider. "Yeah, I'm going to hire a pirate to do my home renovation". "Um, no".

Given the economy, I'm trying to help him out. Website, business cards, etc.

So, the eye patch is something to draw upon, it's memorable. "The guy with the patch".

Any suggestions? The Good Pirate Contracting? etc.

"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king".

One-Eyed King Contracting (obvious)
or
One King Contracting (more subtle)
or
King of Diamonds Contracting (if you want to reference how those kings are typically rendered with one eye showing in a deck of cards. This could give you some graphical mileage on business cards and other materials.)

One-Eyed Jacks

Yes, with the subscript: All Trades

The logo could be a Jack of Clubs (traditionally a Two-eyed Jack) with the patch drawn in over the appropriate eye.

If you go with "One King" people will think "Very Intense Christian". (Some people will love this, I'm sure.)

Even with the subscript you might get confused with that brothel and casino across the border.

An Eye for Quality Painting and Restoration.

With a business card printed like the jack of diamonds playing card on the reverse.

He could just use his real name with the title "One-eyed jack of all trades."

Avast! Professional Painting

[NAME], Handyman
a patch for all problems

I would shy away from anything involving "one-eye" or even "eye" (in most cases). It's a little creepy.

I didn't realize a moment ago that that is now and Avatar reference. These bastards ruin everything.

But, still maybe. Polyphemus means "famous everywhere" and he was the cylcops in The Odyssey... blinded with a sharp stick by Odysseus.
