I can't say why, but it reminds me of "Nine to Five" by Dolly Parton. posted by SPrintF at 9:21 PM on December 8, 2010
It reminded me of about a half dozen recent pop tunes in the first 60 seconds of singing. I think it's a mixture of several melodies, slightly modified and strung together.
Giving it a bit more thought, I think I mostly hear "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry. posted by me3dia at 9:32 PM on December 8, 2010
Man, that does sound like a million pop songs. For some reason, this is what popped into my head on first listen: Simple Kind of Life. Something similar to me in the chorus melody, and also has breathy, sing-songy vocals. posted by otolith at 9:33 PM on December 8, 2010
Sounds like lots of stuff, honestly. Please see Australian comedy group's gag about the four chord rule for a pretty good explanation. posted by Gilbert at 9:48 PM on December 8, 2010
Whoops, group is called Axis of Awesome, for those who are interested. posted by Gilbert at 9:51 PM on December 8, 2010
Is it possibly reminding you of Radiohead's Creep? That song has a very similar chord progression, repeated ad nauseum like in this one. You can pretty much sing Creep overtop Bad Girl Good Girl, and it fits like a glove. posted by Balonious Assault at 10:13 PM on December 8, 2010 [1 favorite]
"Man, I Feel Like a Woman" comes to mind for me.
That's the first thing I thought of too. posted by fshgrl at 10:48 PM on December 8, 2010
The "You don't know me" part reminds me of Rihanna's "Breaking Dishes".
It is a very zeitgeist sort of song, like they took the last couple of years of pop and stuck it in a blender. posted by Georgina at 11:01 PM on December 8, 2010
I'm getting a Jason Mraz "I'm Yours" vibe from it, can't articulate why exactly. posted by TwoWordReview at 11:17 PM on December 8, 2010
Hmm, something reminded me of Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U." posted by Dixon Ticonderoga at 11:32 PM on December 8, 2010
During the intro I got flashes of Atomic. Which is odd, because they don't sound much alike. posted by flabdablet at 11:49 PM on December 8, 2010
I don't know if it helps but the song is a I-iii-vi-IV -- F,A,Dm,Bb
(was curious since Gilbert brought up the 4 chord rule which is normally I-V-vi-IV using C-G-Am-F. This is pretty close. I iii isn't a very common progression to my knowledge, anyone know a few popular songs that use it?)
What part of the song sounded familiar to you OP? The music, the lyrics, the way it was sung? The whole thing?
Based on all this theory talk I'm going to put in my vote as The Beatles - Help since it uses a I-iii-vi... =] posted by zephyr_words at 1:44 AM on December 9, 2010
These are great suggestions-- I know the "Hello, hello, hello" part sounds like Jason Mraz - I'm Yours, and I'm looking through the other ideas right now. Mostly I'm curious about :38-:50. It sounds like an extremely classic song, maybe country. posted by acidic at 2:14 AM on December 9, 2010
I'm hearing a bit of:
Radiohead - Creep
Katy Perry - If we ever meet again
Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky
I am thoroughly enjoying this song and video. posted by doublehappy at 3:07 AM on December 9, 2010
Possibly also The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon posted by doublehappy at 3:13 AM on December 9, 2010
It definitely has the "Creep" chord progression, along with the kind of "swingy" rhythm of "I Kissed a Girl." posted by mothershock at 5:17 AM on December 9, 2010
I have had Britney singing "Womanizer" stuck in my head since I watched this video (42 times) last night. They are completely different, yet somehow not at the same time. Maybe it's a different Britney song, but I really don't need to listen to a whole bunch of those to check.
I do love "Good Girl, Bad Girl" though. posted by artychoke at 7:05 AM on December 9, 2010
