Weight vs Sanity

I'm curious about experiences with medical weight loss clinics. Do they work? If so, any recommendations for doctors, specifically in New York or Brooklyn.

I'm not interested in drinking any kind of "shake" for the next 6 months OR hypnosis. FYI.

I used a local place here in Florida a couple of years ago and managed to lose about 50 pounds in 6 months. The regime was basically a modified Atkins diet along with calcium pyruvate, weekly B12 shots, clinic supplied vitamins, and an appetite suppressant (low dose, 3X a day). Cost got to be a bit much when I was laid off ($65 a week) and I quit and put most of the weight back on. It worked great while I was on it, but there wasn't a behavior modification or education component to work for long term maintenance. Still, I am considering trying it again.

Not sure this is the type of clinic you had in mind, but I lost 40 pounds using HMR. You sign up for classes for X times per week. You get phone calls from their staff X times per week. You eat only their shakes, meals, and bars, with optional fruits and vegetables. (Bars are very yummy.) You get weighed every week and, if you're doing the strict diet without the fruits and vegetables, examined by a nurse every week. Some of the classes involve discussing how you can make the meals more interesting (adding spices and such). When you reach a good weight, you can attend more classes to learn about eating regular foods (still supplementing with their products) in order to maintain your weight. All very supportive, if a bit boring (weight loss is never interesting), and there's a nurse there at all times. After 3 years, I still have a relationship with them.
