Another Affirmative Action Thread...

Is affirmative action in college admissions a catch-22?

Lately, my university has held numerous discussions centered around affirmative action, race, and socioeconomic background. The student participants range from mid-western cowgirls to second-generation Cambodians. On average, recent immigrants who are unexposed to the U.S.'s academic stance in addition to middle-to-upper class students do seemingly well academically and socially. This creates a unique culture in which many of the underrepresented minorities are well-off and can't wait to obtain leadership positions back at home. The genuinely disadvantaged youth, however, usually lack the ability to network or study effectively. As a result, some choose less competitive majors just to stay afloat. Their communities see counseling and disability services as taboo, so some fall by the wayside and flunk out. One of my friends (a senior), for example, currently has a 2.2 GPA and is on the verge of failing this semester.

Should these universities that pride themselves on diversity be held accountable for grade discrepancies and low retention rates? Should affirmative action be eliminated once and for all? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
