How to upgrade in-car navigation system?

How to upgrade in-car navigation system? We have a 2008 Toyota Landcruiser which came with in-built satnav. An upgrade disc here in New Zealand will cost $800!! This seems like a ridiculous rip-off. You could buy half of the roads in New Zealand for less than $800 ;-) Does anyone know how to upgrade in-car nav systems? My parents had the same problem with their old Jaguar...

I'm sorry, I don't know how to update in-car nav systems here (I also live in New Zealand), but it would certainly be worthwhile to call a few shops and ask for quotes, especially high-end mechanics or Toyota dealerships. I'd call a few car audio/alarm shops as well.

If you're in Wellington, I could recommend a few.

I have a friend who had a connection to the sale of used cars from premium marquees (Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, etc). He said that, basically, a SatNav adds nothing to the resale value of a 2 year car for reasons that are becoming obvious to you: 1) data updates are expensive 2) hardware keeps improving.

So, bottom line, there are probably no options that will seem reasonably priced. The most reasonable will probably be a new portable nav system with a car mount, or even an iPad + nav app, but those have the downside of being theft targets.

These guys seem to supply maps for a bit cheaper:

but I couldn't get anything for NZ. Maybe send 'em an email?

Ironically, an aftermarket navigation system would likely be less than the cost of that update and would have less expensive future updates. I've seen navigation update DVDs on eBay before, but I can't say I've ever been looking for NZ maps.

Vendor lock-in is a beautiful thing (for vendors).

Response by poster: Thanks defcom1 for that link - cheaper indeed. Have emailed them.

wierdo, you're right an aftermarket system would be cheaper, but would there be anything that works with the existing screen?
