Snood is a dumb word and hard to google

Emergency shopping filter: How can I find the J. Crew snood or something very similar to it for cheaper than the $49.50 (I'd ideally like to pay less than $30 total for it) on the website? I need to have it by December 20th at the very latest.

Ann Taylor Loft has several similar things. They apparently prefer the term "infinity scarf" and there's an ongoing 40 percent off promotion and they start at $34.50.

If you know a knitter, you might look for a pattern for a knitted smoke ring, or a moebius, or a cowl, or a neckwarmer, or a gaiter, or a balaclava.

I've got a bunch queued in my Ravelry account; I'm happy to share them with you or another knitter on there.

Response by poster: The Ann Taylor Loft scarves look great, except that I'd really like one that has enough fabric to become a hood as well.

Best answer: I don't know about a knit one, but the American Apparel one has plenty of fabric and can definitely become a hood.

Searching for "cowls" would be your best bet. Try Etsy.

Have you checked Etsy?

Other terms to search for: Circle Scarf, Loop Scarf, or Infinity Scarf.

Best answer: These urban outfitters ones are pretty big. I just did a big mall shopping trip and pretty much most chain stores had a version. I know I saw versions at GAP, Banana Republic, Macys. and lots of other places.

Duh. Sorry.

Best answer: How's this one? (disclosure: work-related self link) If it's just the circle/infinity scarf shape you're looking for and not necessarily the black and white color scheme, there's a bunch of other ones over at ModCloth in addition to that one, too.

Wintersilks has those for about $15. Not that color, though.

Best answer: Definitely include "cowl" in your search. "Infinity scarf" is the phrase I keep hearing and they're trendily ubiquitous this year.

If Etsy doesn't give you want you want, try Etsy Alchemy. The J. Crew style would be remarkably easy for a knitter to duplicate, especially at that size, gauge, and color. And if you go for a wool blend like in the J. Crew example, it wouldn't be super expensive.

That's not even what a snood is. A snood is a hairnet-looking thing. Fucking J. Crew.

Etsy, on sale through tomorrow.

Best answer: I've never heard of that thing called a snood before, (I thought snoods were those things that go over hair buns?) so search for cowl or infinity scarf and maybe also include "hood" in your search. Etsy can be really good, but I've noticed that not all knitwear is of equal quality. Some of the stuff linked here is in garter stitch and looks rather bulky rather than the finer stockinette (no bumps on the outside) knit of the J. Crew you linked. It's in a loose gauge that would be easy to replicate, but you want to look closely at any handknits to make sure they seem well-made.

I was on my phone when I posted before, so here is the link to the WinterSilks one. Which they call a cowl hood, btw. Agree that this is completely not a snood.

Ooh! Ooh! Someone on MetaChat posted a link to the Buff. It's a little more sporty/casual than you're looking for, but they have lots of designs, including solids and abstract prints. Mainly, the shape of it will do what you want, and the price is right.

Best answer: Yep yep that isn't a snood. A snood is something that holds your hair. This is a cowl or a neck-gaiter or an "infinity scarf" or what have you, but not a snood. Silly J. Crew.
