Kids Book Help

I'm trying to locate an old kids book, probably published before 1980, about a kid who goes on a big journey in his backyard, or some woods. Everything he encounters takes on human form and helps him on his journey. E.g. a bee and a bear. The bee becomes some kind of rotund warrior, and the bear turns into a Norman looking guy and has a big sword and shield. It was probably for preteens, probably 40 or 50 pages long.

Best answer: A bit of a long-shot, but is it The King With Six Friends? It has a bee-swarm, an elephant, a snake, a tree, an axe, and fire that all become humanoid in order to help the wandering, kingdom-less king win the hand of a princess.
