What is this noise coming from my Macbook Pro?
There is a noise coming out of my 17" 2010-model MBP. (link (36-sec mp3) -- it's pretty quiet in the recording, but it's there; just turn up your volume) It sounds mechanical, but it doesn't seem to be tied to any particular kind of hardware. It occurs most when the MBP is sitting on a slightly flexible surface (like a fabric placemat). At first I thought it was the hard drive clicking (DOOM!) but my work laptop, which is a 15" MBP, makes the same noise and it has a solid state drive.
The noise is very, very disconcerting. Is this something I should hand over to Apple for service?

Response by poster: The system volume doesn't make a difference; mute or not, the sound occurs.

The Mouthchew, you have solved my mystery as well, thank you. One pile on question though: This isn't an abnormal or bad noise, indicating adverse outcomes for the machine right?
(i tried searching for this myself, but I was calling it a tink, which lead to all sorts of questions about harddrive "thinking" noises, now I'm just ticked off)

Wish I knew. The impression I got from reading the discussions and the suggested fixes was that it's more of an annoying design flaw than a sign of impending doom.

Is there any change if you adjust the system volume? Do you hear the sound if you plug in some headphones?
