Need a shakta novel!

I need a book about Shakta (Indian goddess) mysticism!

Any recommendations for literature that would be good for college students to engage Shakta (Hindu Goddess) mysticism?

Specific points of interest are strains of thought that identify Shakti with Vedanta / Brahman and/or universalize the goddess.

Classical poetry / hymns are OK, but a modern novel would be preferable.

Two poets that focus on Kali and the creator/destroyer dichotomy:

Mirabai (16th c. AD) (i.e. For Love of the Dark One)

Ramprasad Sen (18th c. AD) (i.e. Grace and Mercy in Her Wild Hair)

These are pretty accessible -- I studied them in undergrad.

The editor Andrew Schelling has edited both, and is an expert, so a search on him will get you a foothold.

There's also a website from the Smithsonian exhibit on Devi in manifestations and different worship traditions (about ten years ago) that has some good visuals and introductory material.

If you're picking one goddess, Durga's myths tackle a lot of the theme of universalism.
