Need online accounting System for $10M/yr non-profit funded by federal grants.

We are medium-sized non-profit that does scientific research. We are currently ~$2m per year but we are projecting growth to $10M/yr in the next 2-4 years. We use quickbooks online and our work-arrangements have adapted to being able to access our accounting system online.

We were planning a controlled move to another accounting system next year; however, Quickbooks just swapped out their payroll system with a system from another company they purchased. Critical functionality is not available in the new system and we are considering a fast move to a new accounting.

The usual culprints - Peachtree and Deltek - are not available online. Before we resign ourselves to a system we can't access from the beach, are there any online accounting systems with promise that we should consider.

We need a system that is compatible with federal government requirements for grants and can do budgeting.

It's my understanding that Blackbaud's Financial Edge system has an online version.

Response by poster: I should also mention that our office is mac based.

I still think that the hosted version of Financial Edge would be well worth looking into. System reqs are here and it does look like Macs are supported (though I've seen some discussion about the inability to use Safari).

My recommendation is based on the grant and project features, well, and the fact that there's a hosted version.

Response by poster: i've been looking at it. I like it. But I called them and they don't seem to be aware that they have a hosted version even though the link you sent shows they do.

Thank you very much. I'll keep looking at it.

I have done a similar search and concluded that the market really isn't that developed yet. In truth it might be easier to keep using Quickbooks, even though it is annoyingly awful, and just move your payroll to another outside provider.

Failing that you could set up a Windows server somewhere, perhaps in the cloud, and run any Windows based accounting solution, then remote in to that from the beach with either VNC or an RDP client like Remote Desktop Connection Client. I think that is how the option Zohpi mentioned works. You can do that with the desktop version of Quickbooks as well - there are a handful of official hosting companies and a fleet of unofficial ones out there. If you google for "peachetree hosting" you'll see a few companies who host Peachtree for remote access.
