iPod replacement halp

My original iPod Mini, circa 2004, has finally died. I need to replace it with another mp3 player with an FM transmitter. What would you fine folks out there recommend?

I mainly use this for listening to podcasts in my car, which doesn't have an audio-in jack, so the FM transmitter is key. Cheapness is a factor, as well. Not too picky on brand.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Best answer: The Apple Store is selling refurbished previous-generation 8GB iPod Nanos for $99. It's unclear if you already have an iPod-compatible FM transmitter already, but if you don't, the Griffin iTrip will do the job reasonably well for $25 from Amazon.

Best answer: How did it die? You might be able to fix your mini - iFixit has badass guides and cheap parts. I have a third generation iPod that I plan to revive someday. I miss that old interface...

Best answer: Sansa Fuze by Sandisk. Amazon has an 8 gb for $70, but you can find them cheaper. They also come in 2 and 4gb sizes. And have a microSD/microSDHC slot.

I don't mean to derail you from what you're after but I find that the Dynex cassette adapter works perfectly with my ipod (the Belkin version is useless crap).

2nd the cassette thing. I just use a cheap unbranded one and it works great for me, but TMMV. I find it muuuch better than an FM transmitter.

You can get an fm transmitter for any mp3 player with an audio out jack (aka every mp3 player ever). Then I just suggest using whatever comes up on woot first (sansas are great.) Or whatever strikes your fancy on amazon or whatever.

Be aware that downloading/synching podcasts in a non-apple environment is slightly harder - most of them don't come with synching software or it's crap, so find a third party one. I've heard media monkey is good.

...and of course, I meant YMMV.

Though I'm also not directly answering you're question, I'm Nth-ing the suggestions for a cassette adapter, assuming you have a cassette player. I've been using mine since 2005, still going strong.

Otherwise, the new Nano also has an FM transmitter.

FM radio, not an FM transmitter.

I've replaced the battery in my iPod mini, and while it wasn't as easy as changing a flashlight battery or whatever, it wasn't all that bad, a couple of hours max, and that was moving real slow and careful. If it's the hard drive that's gone south, you can either put in a new (same type) drive or, very cool, you can put in a CF (compact flash) memory card into the mini instead, which, along with being flash instead of mechanical should improve battery life, too.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, I don't have a cassette player in my car, so that route is out. I think it is the battery that died, so I might try iFixit first and hope that I don't brick the thing.

it's not too hard to replace the battery. the hardest part is removing the glued-on bottom.

Like the Nano, the Sansa Fuze also has an FM radio, but not a transmitter. I was looking for the same thing, but had no real luck. I'm going to end up getting a stand-alone transmitter.
