DC temporary housing help needed

My 26-year-old sister just got a great job in Washington, DC, and will be starting on November 5. The final offer came through very quickly and the employer is eager to have her start ASAP, so she now has very little time to line up temporary housing. She will eventually look for a permanent apartment/share, of course, but for now she just needs a clean and safe place to sleep at night.

Here are a few relevant details. My sister has visited DC before but does not know the city well at all. Her office building is close to American University. She will not have a car and needs relatively easy access to public transportation. Her new employer does not offer any relocation/housing assistance. She has no friends or acquaintances in the area.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I found my apartment on a week's notice (and still live there!).

It wasn't fun, but it can be done. You're lucky that it's this week, because landlords will be itching to fill any vacant properties they have at the beginning of the month (or shortly thereafter).

Have her get out to DC asap, and start looking. Hopefully she has a friend here that she can stay with for a few days?

Does she have financial resources to get by at a hostel for a while? On preview, that 'Previously' link looks helpful.

I would suggest the International Guest House my mother and father in law have done several week or two stays there while doing work in DC for probably 20 years. It's not on the subway line, but it is a quick bus ride over to America from there.

It's run by Mennonites, but if she isn't into that they are really low key about it.

I would also strongly suggest she does her apartment hunting once she has moved to dc.

She could try craigslist "sublets and temporary." That is what I am trying right now - my job starts on the 8th and I don't have a place yet. (I am based 1-2 hours outside the city now) It seems like they are going fast right now, but hopefully I can find something next week like schmod says.

Response by poster: Thank you! I appreciate all the help. She is already confirmed for 1 week at the International Guest House (thanks, akabobo), and will take it from there.
