No slider bar for contrast...now what?

How can I adjust the contrast on an iPhone 3G?
Brightness is simple, but contrast and/or gamma? Not so much. I've read quite a few online forum discussions about this already and I'm hoping that someone here will know how to manage the task. I'm willing to download an app to do this, but I am not jailbreaking the phone.

You're probably not going to get very far without jailbreaking, as these preferences appear to be locked away.

Just to second what has already been said: Without jailbreaking, this is not possible.

This system-level setting would be beyond the ken of any iPhone app.
The best you could ever find would be an app that would adjust the colors of the things you view within that app.
