Help me isolate the subliminal messages in this song.

So - I'm a huge fan of Grails, and I've been compulsively listening to their one song 'Take Refuge' lately. Their songs are all instrumental; however a day or two ago, I had it cranked up and noticed that right at the 30 second mark or so in this song there was a slight buzzing sound and then some sort of vocal sample getting played for about 10 seconds, very very low. I believe it's repeated a second time shortly thereafter - the buzzing sound occurs again, but I can't tell if the whispering is the same audio or a different message.

Does anyone have the capability to extract that audio and amplify it to audibility? It's likely just a sample from some bizarre 70s art film or something, but I'd really like to know. The youtube vid probably doesn't have the best quality of source audio, but there are mp3 downloads floating around the intertron on sites of more dubious vintage.

FD, I have the album version of that song in FLAC and I also have the DVD that Youtube clip came from sitting in front of me. I'll check back and see if someone has an audio processing idea for hearing that sound more distinctly and then I can supply higher-quality source material.

Best answer: Hmm...see here there's nothing up my sleeve...is this your card?

It's a sample of Yuri Levitan giving the address for the Minute of Silence in Moscow. The part they sample is from the beginning. He says:

"Attention! Attention! Moscow is speaking and broadcasting!

All central Russian television channels and radio stations are on the air. Watch and listen to Moscow."

But only the second "Attention!" is played, and there's some tape speed-up and whatnot, they futzed with the sample.

But that's what you're hearing.

Response by poster: Hot damn, Famous - may I ask what process you used to pull out the audio enough to be recognizable? Or do you have secret insider information?

Glad to help!

It pretty much was never recognizable to someone who didn't know what to listen for (which was me, at first). I opened it in Audacity and amplified it to the point where I could tell that the voice wasn't speaking English.

The shoutbox on the Last.fm page for the track has a person saying they think they can hear Levitan on it. For shits and giggles I went to the Wikipedia page for Levitan and saw a Yuri Levitan, went to his page, found that he was famous for the annual V-E day address, got Youtube audio of the address in question and found that it perfectly matched what I could actually hear of the sample, and bob's your uncle, as they say in jolly old.

Oh, and also in the process of doing so I found that I really enjoyed the song, so thanks for that!
