Getting my first haircut in ages. Help!!!

I'm a female with long hair (middle of my back). I'm getting a haircut tomorrow. What should I do?

I'd like something funky, but not too. Sophisticated, but not too old. Probably medium-length to long.

Here is a picture of just my face. Any ideas are much appreciated!

The "standard" good haircut for medium/long length hair that leaves you with multiple easy-peasy styles you can do daily is: long layers, with face framing layers. You can do a long side-swept bang if you'd like the option to have a nice mysterious swatch of hair to fall over one eye. It's easy to just blow dry and go on your way, add a little curl to the ends to glam things up and looks great in a ponytail or a messy bun.

You can upload your photo here and try out a bunch of hairstyles. You can change the hair color and do quite a bit of manipulation to make the hair fit your head. If you see something you like, get a screen cap and forget about signing up for an account. One further bit of advice: avoid the people with very shiny hair, it seems to mess up the image processing when it gets attached to your head. This definitely helped me pick out my new hairstyle!

I would agree with french films about trains. I would recommend keeping it at least to your shoulders, with layers, not too short of layers, have stylist use a razor to help give it more bounce and movement.

The funkiness, i suppose, can come from the side-swept bang, or even adding a few highlights in the front or just on the top (a "partial" highlight). If you decide on doing any highlights, make sure to not go too drastically lighter-opt for some nice spicy color that would go well with your brunette color. Funkiness doesn't always have to come from a "spikey" haircut or whatever, can come from experimenting with color, too!

And yes, this cut is very easy to handle/style. But I'd start with this type of cut first; this will be enough of a major change for you if you havent' had a style in years. Especially if you also decided to through in a few highlights (on those newly razored, sexy, side-swept bangs...) But you can always take it shorter or funkier (with cut and color) from there if you want.

(by the way, i'm a former stylist of 12 years; have had several clients in your position). Memail me if you have any other questions, concerns!

Have fun!

You look great with your current hair... your facial shape qualifies you for, potentially, looking really great with a medium-short "messy"/"bedhead" hair - although you'll need to use product daily. Or even boyishly-short messy head. How'd you like to look as a blonde/half-blonde (extreme highlights)?

I presume that you've never seen this particular hairdresser you're seeing tomorrow - the really good ones are able and enthusiastically willing to transition your cut into what you want over a period of months. Not having any work done in a while leaves you a blank slate - if it means enough to you, it might be worthwhile shopping around for a good hairdresser with which to try new looks/styles and transition you there over the course of a few months.

Talk with the hairdresser first. They should show you (picture) examples of what they'll try to achieve with you. You can negotiate to either "give it a go" or "lets slowly transition to this." It'll also depend on your budget. I found a great hairdresser - who I can't really afford anymore - that I keep going back to because we have a decent discourse.

have stylist use a razor to help give it more bounce and movement.

Be careful with this, especially with explicitly asking your stylist to do it. The results will depend heavily on your hair's texture.

For years I went to stylists who assumed that using a razor on my straight, fine hair would give it more "movement". It never worked. I just got a limp uneven mess that was even more prone to flyaways than usual and grew out like a pile of poo. Then I changed salons and my new stylist stopped razoring my hair. It looks worlds better. Maybe not as trendy when I walk out of the salon, but it's a good cut that flatters for longer than the first half hour. I'm not against razoring across the board - but I'd trust your stylist when it comes to what kind of tools to use.

I like this hollowed out long layer shape.

Response by poster: Thanks for the extremely helpful advice, everyone! Hortense - that's a really cool cut. Maybe I'll go for something like that, but a bit longer in general.

Yep - I'm going to a new hairdresser, and he comes very highly recommended by somebody I trust. The cut is at 3:00 today. Woot!
