How to clean grey suede?

Hello, I recently bought a pair of grey suede Oxford shoes. Second time I wore them it rained really heavily and once they dried out, the light grey suede had darkened somewhat. Anyone got any tips about how to lighten them up again?

This article posted today seems to suggest toothpaste. Not sure if that would be appropriate for suede or not.

I've also heard of rubbing cornmeal into the suede, although i've never personally tried that either.

A cobbler will be able to clean them up for a small price, or invest in a suede eraser ($5-$7), available at any cobbler. Once they're clean, buy some suede protectant to keep them going through further wet weather.
