Drilling for Oil Research

Research filter: I'm trying to find statistics about offshore oil/gas drilling in the gulf of mexico. Specifics inside. I'm also wondering why Google Answers closed and if there are other paid research sites of similar quality?

Ideally, I'm looking for current and projected statistics about offshore drilling (oil and gas) specifically in the gulf of mexico (preferably US regulated only), but I would settle for recent and historical statistics.

I'm looking for data that breaks down the number of well sites by well type, for example exploratory, developmental, producing, dead/closed, and also any statistics relative to site depth, pressure and reserves.

I figure there must be some governmental or regulatory sources available on some of this but having trouble finding it.

I'm also wondering what happened to Google Answers and if there are any other similar paid research sites of similar quality?

The US Dept. of Energy keeps -- and shares* -- significant energy data.

The BOEMRE, which used to be the Minerals Management Service (apparently) offers details on mining and drilling, including in the Gulf.

There is likely a library near you which participates in the Federal Depository Library program (directory here). The Government Documents/Information librarian at your depository library is probably able to help with this.

On the GA question, the official statement is "We considered many factors in reaching this difficult decision, and ultimately decided that the Answers community's limited size and other product considerations made it more effective for us to focus our efforts on other ways to help our users find information."
