shopping for a case/bag for my canon rebel

i am looking for a case for my new camera (canon rebel xs). i would like it to fit the camera with the kit lens and maybe have some extra room for a wallet. it doesn't necessarily have to be a camera case, but something that would fit and pad my camera and protect it from rain. thanks! thank you!

I have this one and quite like its rugged look. Tons of pockets, padding inside, compartments for the camera and lenses, love it.

A friend recently bought a soft sided insulated lunch bag to carry his camera in. He has to leave it in his car a lot and decided someone would be less likely to steal his lunch than something that looks like it contains a camera. Seems to be working out great for him.

I carry that very same camera in this bag: Timbuk2 Click. It fits quite well, plus can also accommodate a water bottle and my wallet and other small odds and ends. It feels very sturdy to me and I've been using it for about 2 years. (I got mine on sale at REI, though, for quite a lot less than the price listed here.)

I have this one and it's very nice. Small, but enough room for extras, like my wallet. By coincidence I bought a Lowepro camera bag and laptop bag at about the same time, and both are excellent -- great quality at a low price.

I do love the looks of the National Geographic bag that Dragonness posted, though.

I wouldn't recommend buying a camera bag online, or exclusively on the basis of a recommendation. They are one of those things that really ought to be tried out for fit, ideally with all the gear you eventually intend to carry in it.

I would just head to the biggest camera store nearby and try a few out.

Best answer: I'm a fan of Crumpler's camera bags. I've got their 5 Million Dollar Home and it fits my D90 with an extra lens or two, along with some extra room for memory cards, filters etc. The storage space inside is adjustable via a couple of velcro pads.

I also like that it doesn't really scream "camera bag!"

They sell online and I know some retail stores carry them. If you want to take a look before you buy, their site should have a list of resellers.

If you live somewhere hot like I do (Texas), try to avoid leaving your camera in your car. The heat is not good for the lenses (the glue may be affected). I got this advice from my photography class instructor.

Response by poster: thanks for all of the suggestions! i think i'm going to head to the crumpler store with my new camera to see which size suits me best. i also also like that it doesn't really scream "camera bag!"
