Where to find a Dutch weather house?

Where can I buy a weather house in Holland?

I'm in Holland right now and somebody wants me to bring back a weather house. It doesn't have to be an antique or the automated version described in the Wiki article, a simple kitschy plastic house with boy-girl figures and a thermometer and/or barometer attached would be good.

I see this is usually described as a German or Swiss device, would there be Dutch versions as well? What kind of store would sell this (in general, or specific stores to check out would be wonderful). Currently I'm in Amsterdam but I will also be in several other Dutch cities and towns over the next week and a bit.

Best answer: I'm Dutch (living near Amsterdam) and I can't remember seeing a weather house in a shop anywhere.

I think your best bet would be larger gift shops or souvenir shops.

Another option might be to try either the Xenos or Blokker shops that you can find in the high street of pretty much any Dutch town. They both sell household and home decoration stuff, and though it's somewhat unpredictable what exact articles they'll have in stock at any given time you might be in luck.

Best answer: I suspect Xenos and Blokker will disappoint you, although it is worth a visit, they may surprise you.

I've tried to google "weerhuis" for you - a fairly literal translation. I've found this, their store is in Gaanderen near the German border, but it is only open by appointment, so you'd be better of buying through the net from them.

Best answer: Wow ... I live in Amsterdam and have never seen one ... either in a Xenos or Blokker, or in the local antique and old junk markets on the Nieuwmarkt or Waterlooplein or Nordermarkt.

You might ask these guys who seem to run a museum which includes a few as exhibits.

Or ... try the search term "weerhuisje" and you get:

Response by poster: Thanks for all the info... I ended up finding a (new, plasticky) one at a souvenir shop across from the Bloemenmarkt. I'll be in a small town near the German border in a few days so I'll keep an eye out for something more genuine!
