What happens to Smash Williams on Friday Night Lights?

What happens in the end to the character Brian "Smash" Williams on Friday Night Lights?

I want to know now, but I don't want to know what happens to the other characters. That's why I can't read the Wikipedia article about the series.

I just started watching Season 3, at which point he has decided to start working out again after his knee injury kept him from going to college on a football scholarship.

I can't figure out a way to get this one question answered without spoiling the rest of the story.

the wiki for the series mentions in the season 3 summary "Smash Williams, who injured his knee during the previous year's playoffs, rediscovers his love for the game, gets a tryout with a college, and succeeds in winning a spot on their team."

there is no mention of him in the season 4 summary.

I read today that he is going to be "referenced" in the final season but the actor will not actually be coming back to the show.
