Bloglines replacement that isn't GReader or Netvibes
September 12, 2010 2:03 AM
Now that Bloglines is shutting down I need to find a new online feed reader for my secondary (entertainment) feeds. I already use Google Reader for work related feeds and like to keep my two streams uncrossed so I can avoid drifting off into entertainment land. What are the best other online feed readers?
I've just taken a look at netvibes and there is so much widget cruft/spamvertising in the initial setup that I am not very interested in continuing with it.
Basically, I want the same features I have in google reader and bloglines including feed import as well. I'm also not interested in offline readers as I switch between several computers and operating systems throughout the day.

Piggybacking on lakerk's answer: You can sign into multiple Google Reader screen-names simultaneously, switching between the different accounts using a simple dropdown menu. It will let you maintain two separate RSS set-ups with their own subscriptions and folder hierarchy.

I really do love GReader as well but I pulled my entertainment feeds out for a reason. I don't want to make a second account because I use things like leechblock when I really need to focus so I can block my access to distractions but I still maintain my work related reading.
I've played around with Netvibes a bit more and that looks like it might be an acceptable Bloglines replacement once you switch from the widget view to a reader view and set it to expanded mode.
I'd still like to hear about some other options though.

I'm a user of Netvibes & GReader, and I like them both for different scenarios. But, if you would like a different alternative, I'd suggest at searching Google for Bloglines and clicking the 'similar' link beneath the results. It revealed quite a few alternative solutions.

I'm in the exact same situation as srboisvert and second his opinion of why a second GReader won't work for me. While googling helps, it'd be nice to get user feedback and recommendations

I bought Fever and really like it. You'll need to install and update it on your own, but it's rather pretty and works well.

Is that only an iPhone app or is there anything still left out there on the internets for those few of us who are not using this phone?

Yeah, I guess the page is misleading, it's actually a self-hosted web app that also happens to be pretty on an iPhone. I'm using it through Firefox and it works just nice.

I am absolutely addicted to bloglines and am in a small panic to find a replacement too. I do not like google reader because of the need to actively specify 'Mark all items read', and I don't want to see articles I've read and already marked.
I just loaded up 'Fastladder' and while slow, the look, feel and function seem pretty close to Bloglines. You have the option of the feed being marked as read either immediately, or when moving on to the next feed.
If anyone finds anything better, I hope I hear about it in this thread!

Oddly, I've really liked the RSS feeder embedded in my Flock browser for fashion oriented/art feeds. Greader for everything else though.

Seconding srboisvert on Netvibes - I was a Bloglines user for years and have been so much happier with Netvibes. NOT using the widget view, though! The reader views have "Read it Later" options much like the Pin option on Bloglines.

A few notes since I switched from Bloglines to Netvibes:
-Netvibes is a bit slow - too much fancy pants javascript, doesn't always load the images in feeds (tastespotting seems to be a problem) and also it doesn't do a good job of updating the item counts in the left pane treeview.
-Bloglines appears to have stopped showing me about 20 of my feeds despite those feeds being updated regularly. Thinking back this seems to have been going on for many months if not longer.

More notes:
I am going to ditch Netvibes because it consistently shows me items I have already viewed. Over and over and sometimes reloads entire feeds (and no the bloggers didn't update their templates).
Still looking for a replacement....

Only ten days to go, I'm worried about no replacement. Did google buy them or what? (sorry been off the grid and wondering if GReader is becoming default by no choice)

winnowtag.org is an interesting alternative to traditional feed readers. Smart tags use a few examples you've identified to automatically find info on the same topic, showing items you may be interested in, as they are published. You get a continuous stream of items on your topics without having to slog through a ton of stuff you don't care about. winnowTag is reading 7,400 feeds daily, retaining 650k items for 90 days. You can add feeds (it supports OPML), also you can publish any tag as a feed. There's more info at doc.winnowtag.org

No, instead they are using Netvibes' RSS engine. Oh well. Might as well use Netvibes since my problems won't be solved by continuing with the 'new' bloglines.
