None.

Exercising is one of the few times during my day when I can focus on just one thing and I prefer to savor it. I consider music during exercise a distraction.

It depends on what kind of exercise I'm doing. If it's yoga, I usually prefer ambient, dub, ambient dub, etc. If I'm walking or doing LSD bicycle rides (uh, that's long slow distance), usually books-on-tape. For jogging and more strenuous cycling, either bebop or the kind of modern jazz that's played too darn fast. For hiking, trail running and off-road cycling, I usually opt for no music.

I consider music during exercise a distraction.

Yes, that's sort of the point, no? See, you're exercising, and therefore you need to be distracted from the fact that you're exercising... because it's unpleasant and stuff... not everyone is a masochist enough to "savor" it.

No workout mix would be complete without Revv Me Up, favored by Brock Samson of the Venture Bros. (top link is MP3 download). If it's good enough for Dr. Venture's Swedish murder machine, it's good enough for you!

It probably sounds weird, but my absolute favorite CD for getting a great cardio workout is Rage Against the Machine's Battle of Los Angeles. I don't usually listen to "angry" rock, but that album really gets the energy up for me.
Some people are -- it's how the president thinks. He has a treadmill installed in Air Force One and runs five miles a day but doesn't even watch television during, because he "gets into the fitness." I think it's indicative of the dial tone which would register, if his brain wave was monitored.

Myself, I'm constantly searching for music (anything, really) which matches my exact running tempo. I've so far compiled four tapes, which I play with a Walkman, while running on the treadmill. This exercise would be impossible otherwise.

I've started watching movies while treadmilling. The first time I tried it, on a friend's recomendation, I got so distracted that I walked for an hour and a half (vs my normal 20 minutes). Well, not entirely true. I did know that I was on it for an extended period, it's just that I was so into the movie that it didn't feel monotonous.

OT: Someone recently asked MeFat about weight loss and a few people recommended Fitday for calorie consumption/expenditure tracking (and a whole lot more). Well, a big thanks to everyone who threw that out there because I absolutely love the site. Nothing has helped me more for losing weight than seeing actual daily caloric numbers in vs out, rather than simply guessing and thinking that I was eating 'pretty good'... I found that jounaling everything helped keep me focused and on track. ymmv...

I think I'm in the minority here, but I like the slowest longest droneyest music I can find when I'm exercising - particularly when running - I get lost in it and easily loose track of time, it's a perfect distraction for me.

When using an MP3 player while cycle-commuting, I would play whatever I felt like listening to when I set off, but I soon noticed that some kinds of music made me chill out and I'd take a nice relaxing cycle, while other kinds would ramp me up and I'd really work hard without even realising it. Either way, it had to be music I really liked - stuff I'd get into, (and for the later) stuff that makes you want to move :)

So, just experiment until you find the music that does the opposite of chill you out. Rammstein was one of mine, but I doubt it's the same from person to person, since I think it's more important that you really like the music and really get into it, than what the name of the band is.

Music from your favourite action movie might have a similar effect :-)

Strange, I'll be the first one:

Squarepusher for a long time. But now it's completely the Venetian Snares. Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding is so amazingly perfect, as well as Winter in the Belly of a Snake too. So addicted.
